Gambling in the United Kingdom is a regulated pastime, and with that regulation comes a network of support services that most players never think about until they need them. The scale of the issue is worth putting on the record: the Gambling Commission estimates around 0.5% of adults are problem gamblers, while a further 3.8% gamble at moderate or low risk levels. That is roughly 340,000 people in the highest-risk bracket alone. Knowing where help sits before you need it is simple good practice, much like checking the licensing details on a non Gamstop casino before you deposit. Check out additional details at WinChampion non gamstop paysafe casinos.
What follows is a plain guide to the main services, what each one does, and how to reach them. No jargon, no sales pitch , just the numbers and the contact points.
National Helplines and Treatment Services
GamCare operates the National Gambling Helpline on 0808 8020 133, open 24 hours a day, every day of the year. It is free to call from UK landlines and mobiles, and the service offers confidential advice for both gamblers and affected family members. In recent reporting periods the helpline handled tens of thousands of calls annually, with a growing share coming from worried relatives rather than players themselves.
GamCare also delivers structured treatment through the National Gambling Treatment Service, which is commissioned by the NHS and funded by the gambling industry. Treatment is free, confidential, and available across England, Scotland, and Wales. Waiting times vary by region, but the service reports that most people begin some form of support within a few weeks of referral.
The Gordon Moody Association is the other major provider, specialising in residential rehabilitation for the most severe cases. It runs dedicated programmes for men and women, plus retreat and counselling options for those who cannot commit to a live-in stay. Referrals come through the helpline or directly via the charity’s website.
For NHS-specific routes, the National Problem Gambling Clinic in London accepts GP referrals and treats complex cases, including those with co-occurring mental health conditions. Similar NHS-commissioned clinics have opened in Leeds, Manchester, and other regional centres in recent years.
Self-Exclusion Schemes and Blocking Tools
GAMSTOP is the UK’s single self-exclusion scheme. Register once and you are blocked from every Gambling Commission-licensed operator for a minimum of six months, extendable to five years. Registration is free, and the scheme covers well over 200 licensed brands. Crucially, GAMSTOP applies to licensed sites only , players using non Gamstop casinos sit outside its protection, which is exactly why those operators must be approached with extra care and a pre-set budget.
Bank-level blocking is the next layer. Most major UK banks now offer a gambling block feature that stops card transactions to gambling merchants, and several let you set it for 24 hours, 48 hours, or permanently. Monzo, Starling, Lloyds, and Barclays all provide this as standard. It takes minutes to activate through your banking app.
Software blockers add a further barrier. Gamban, often supplied free through GamCare or your bank, blocks gambling sites and apps across devices for a modest annual fee or at no cost via partner schemes. Net Nanny and similar parental control tools can serve the same purpose on shared devices.

Peer Support and Financial Protection
Gamblers Anonymous runs meetings across the UK, modelled on the twelve-step approach, with separate sessions for family members through Gam-Anon. Meetings are free and anonymous, and there are groups in most major towns and cities. For many people, the peer element , speaking to someone who has been through it , is the part that sticks.
On the money side, StepChange and Citizens Advice both offer free debt advice that accounts for gambling-related borrowing. StepChange reports that a meaningful proportion of its clients cite gambling as a contributing factor, and its advisers are trained to handle the specific complications of credit card and payday loan debt tied to betting. Since April 2020, UK-licensed operators have been banned from accepting credit cards, which closed one significant route into debt.
Finally, the Gambling Commission’s own website lists every licensed operator and lets you check a site’s status in seconds. Before signing up anywhere , licensed or otherwise , that check is the fastest five minutes you will spend. If a brand cannot be found on the register, treat it as a red flag and walk away.
